English verbs in Swahili (B)
Verbs are usually defined as words which express actions, but that's not really accurate, since not all verbs express actions (e.g. to cease, to stop, and many impersonal verbs), and also because other type of words can also express actions, like the very word "action", which is a noun. We therefore need a more functional definition. How about this? Verbs are a type of words that can have inflection in person, number, tense, mood and aspect.
In any case, verbs can be classified in transitive and intransitive both in English and Swahili. Transitive verbs are the verbs that can have a direct object, and are marked in our English-Swahili dictionary with the abbreviation vt. Likewise, intransitive verbs cannot have a direct object. You can see them with the abbreviation vi. Nevertheless, one single verb can be both transitive and intransitive, meaning that it can be used in a way that admits a direct object and another which does not.
